Josef Pieper defines sacred actions as those that are performed for their own sake, without any ulterior motive or goal. They are actions that are inherently meaningful and valuable, and are not done for the sake of achieving some other end. This is similar to the sun ritual of the Sioux Indians, in which the ritual is performed for its own sake, as a way of honoring and connecting with the sacred power of the sun. The ritual is not performed in order to achieve some other goal, but is instead a meaningful and valuable action in and of itself. Both Pieper's definition and the sun ritual emphasize the inherent value and significance of sacred actions. **
